Legend has it that contraband brandy was hidden in the Crammer. While the Wiltshire folk were retrieving the liquor on a moonlit night using their hay rakes, they were challenged by Customs and Excise personnel on their activities. They retorted that they were merely trying to retrieve a large cheese (the moon’s reflection) from the water. Henceforth, Wiltshire folk acquired the name of Moonrakers.
